Why a Retreat?

  • It’s hard to find a counselor right now with so many people seeking help and counselors are full
  • Traditional trauma treatment can take years to work on, where as with EMDR, trauma can be treated in several sessions
  • The cost of an EMDR treatment retreat is less than the cost of years of therapy.
  • EMDR retreat costs between $2500-$3000 per retreat; average trauma treatment costs $7800 per year
  • Single-incident trauma can be cleared out in a few sessions using EMDR therefore, a retreat is a great way to work on trauma
  • Complex trauma can be cleared out quickly also utilizing EMDR and getting access to 7 sessions helps further your healing process
  • There is a great benefit to getting away and putting yourself in a setting for healing that a retreat offers

EMDR therapy has proven to be effective in treating trauma and PTSD

What Happens When a Person Experiences Trauma?

When a person experiences traumas, the even can become “stuck” in the brain…sort of frozen in time. When a similar aspect (sight, sounds, smell, thought, emotion, etc.) of the initial traumatic event is experienced in present time, it can feel as if the initial trauma is happening all over again. This creates a biological change in the brain. This can result in biochemical imbalances including (and not limited to) foggy thinking, mood swings, trouble in relating to others, feeling over-stimulated/overwhelmed, or difficulty in finding and maintaining hope for the future/positive change.

The Benefits of EMDR

  • Lessened response to triggers
  • Reduced frequency of symptoms
  • A happier, more fulfilling, meaningful, enjoyable experience of life
  • The awareness to recognize and set healthy, self-sustaining boundaries
  • Feeling a greater sense of safety and well-being in the present
  • Increased strength, confidence, self-esteem, and empowerment

What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.  Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal.  EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.  When you cut your hand, your body works to close the wound.  If a foreign object or repeated injury irritates the wound, it festers and causes pain.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.  EMDR therapy demonstrates that a similar sequence of events occurs with mental processes.  The brain’s information processing system naturally moves toward mental health.  If the system is blocked or imbalanced by the impact of a disturbing event, the emotional wound festers and can cause intense suffering.  Once the block is removed, healing resumes.  Using the detailed protocols and procedures learned in EMDR therapy training sessions, clinicians help clients activate their natural healing processes. Briefly, EMDR involves having the client concentrate on the worst moment of the memory while using bilateral stimulation during the memory; this is repeated with different aspects of the memory until no further distress remains. EMDR is now one of the most well-researched psychotherapy treatments for trauma and (in a recent meta-analysis) has been found to be the most efficient of the well-established trauma treatments.

How Does EMDR Work?

EMDR works by connecting the right and left hemispheres of the brain and crossing the blood brain barrier. This connection stimulates communication between the rational part of the brain, (left hemisphere) and the emotional, creative, and intuitive part of the brain (right hemisphere), where memories of traumatic experiences are often stored. Communication between the two sides of the brain may help to unblock memories so that one can consciously reprocess the event in a healthy way, and integrate a more rational, present-day perspective of the trauma. After reprocessing trauma, we strengthen and integrate a positive self-image and concentrate on a healthy, optimistic future. This is done utilizing relaxation techniques, positive self-statements, and rich, inspiring images and symbols.

What to Expect After EMDR?

Everyone is unique. You may feel tired. You may have a headache. You may feel like your emotions are just under the surface. You may feel overwhelmed. Your symptoms may increase in intensity. This is a normal part of the desensitization stage. It seems this helps you begin to recognize the feelings and thoughts with which you have been living, perhaps without complete conscious awareness. At the retreat, you will have time for journaling and self-care between sessions for your brain to continue to process the trauma.
